Swimsuits during Competition -- 03/4/2010

We've had numerous discussions concerning the latest swimsuit rules from USA-S National (see FINA final list approved swimsuits letter to members-revised1-25-10 from Bruce Straton). Please note that unless the suit is on the "Approved Suit List", it must meet all three requirements in the letter from Bruce Stratton in order to be legal. Suits on the Approved Suit List will also all display a "FINA Approved" label on the suit. The thing that makes this tricky is that some older suits that are not on the approved list have exactly the same model name as suits on the approved list. The rule is, if it does not have a "FINA Approved" label on it, it has to meet the 3 criteria in the letter, which are:

1. Swimsuits for men may not extend above the navel or below the knee and for women may not cover the neck, or extend past the shoulders or below the knee;

2. Material used for swimsuits can be only textile material which is defined as materials consisting of natural and/or synthetic, individual and non-consolidated yarns used to constitute a fabric by weaving, knitting, and/or braiding. Simply put, this would generally refer to suits made only from nylon or Lycra that do not have any rubberized material such as polyurethane or neoprene; and

3. No zippers or other fastening devices are allowed except for a waist tie on a brief or jammer.

There is one suit that has been seen as a particular problem at meets this season. It is a woman's suit with small plastic pieces on the chest (almost like sequins). Since these pieces do not meet the requirement that older suits only contain textile materials, this suit is not legal for competition. Unfortunately, we've heard that this specific suit, even though it has been recalled by Speedo, is still being sold online as meeting the new requirements. Bottom line is that you should read the letter very carefully. If swimmers are wearing suits that do not meet the new criteria, they will be asked to change into a different suit before swimming. Protests filed regarding suits after anyone swims in a questionable suit may also be subject to disqualification.

Please let Ron Marion or Tom Alef know if you have any questions.

Question: Regarding the women's suits with the "sequin-type" pieces - does the suit become legal if the rubber pieces are removed?

Answer: Yes, if the pieces were removed, the suit is legal.

Question: Is the Speedo Fastskin II with Vortext Turbulence Management System a legal suit?

Answer: The Speedo Fastskin II with Vortex Turbulence Management System is not a legal suit unless the dots are removed.

Spring Area Meeting is Sunday, April 26, 2009
